Round Table - Valentines Day 2010, will it be a card, flowers or

Valentines Day 2010, will it be a card, flowers or

By Simon Haydock - 08/09/2009

Perhaps we all have the same dilemma each year, what do you give your loved ones for Valentines Day? They always seem to know if the card came from a proper card shop compared to Tesco or Adsa. Especially if it was bought on the 13th or 14th of February (do they go out looking beforehand?). The same is normally true of the flowers too!

So, I am told that forward planning can make such a difference to the other half. Well if forward planning is what it takes and Venice is such a wonderful place could it be possible to mix the two together? Well thanks to the Italian tablers it can be. They arrange a weekend that coincides with the Venice carnival that takes place. The next one is scheduled for 12th to 14th February next year, 2010.

This is a wonderful event and one of the most special aspects of it is that it is couples event. Just like the great NSW is stag, the best way to enjoy this is in couples. With that said I had to go on my tod and I had a wonderful time. I really have to thank Miss Piggy and Davide.

I arrived a day early for the event and in true table style I was given a great welcome. Just for a change we did not meet in the bar but in a restaurant, a truly Italian restaurant. The food, well what can I say? Amazing, so tasteful, so beautifully cooked, and with such great people. What they will think when they come over to Britain (well they seem to have misplaced their national banner) about our “Italian chain restaurant food” just scares me.

The main event was on the Friday night. It was a masked ball, costumes were available for hire and there were loads of places that you could buy. In the evening we were taken to the venue by boat and when we arrived there to canapés and drinks. Once called to Dinner we proceed upstairs to a room filled with frescos, mirrors and wonderful architecture. The food was again great along with the company. There were over 300 of us. When it was time to leave we left in water taxis they were so sedate and relaxing but as soon as we hit the open water he hit the throttle. Another wonderful table night brought to a conclusion just in a different way.

If you had wanted to have dinner in the same place on the following night then it was advertised at 1,000 Euros! Needless to say and thanks to the tablers we didn’t have to pay anything near that price.

We visited Venice on the Friday and Saturday these were great trips, you’ll find out when you visit. As my flight was late on Sunday night I also went in to Venice once again. It was so funny to see the police officers directing traffic. Not cars or boats but the people! They even had a one way system in operation with no entries and police standing in the lanes to act as barriers!!!

So, you may be wondering what my wife got for Valentines Day. Well a card, flowers and some peace and quite when I attended the Carnival on my own as we couldn’t get a babysitter. Next year I will remember the babysitter.
